Eric van Eyken practices exclusively in international arbitration. He is qualified as a barrister & solicitor (Law Society of Upper Canada), lawyer (Québec) and attorney-at-law (New York). He holds civil and common law degrees from McGill University (with distinction) in addition to a bachelor’s degree in economics and political science (with honours) and an LL.M. in international law specializing in international arbitration from the University of Miami. The latter was obtained on full scholarship as a Young ICCA Scholar.
At Hanotiau & van den Berg, he assists Professor Dr. Albert Jan van den Berg and Ms. Niuscha Bassiri with commercial and public law disputes under various institutional frameworks. His work includes commercial and shareholder disputes between private parties and disputes between private parties and states.
Prior to joining the firm, he was tribunal secretary to a prominent international arbitrator, whom he assisted in both commercial and investment arbitrations. Before pursuing his LL.M. his practice focused on arbitration at boutique and international firms in Toronto and Paris.
He is a long-time supporter of the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna.
