Maarten Draye is a partner at Hanotiau & van den Berg in Brussels. Since 2007, he has built up a solid track record advising and representing clients before arbitral tribunals and state courts, including in proceedings for the enforcement and setting aside of arbitral awards. For more than a decade, he has also sat as arbitrator, with experience as sole, presiding and party-appointed arbitrator as well as emergency arbitrator.

Maarten Draye has been involved in over 70 international arbitration proceedings governed by different substantive and procedural laws under a variety of arbitration rules (ICC, LCIA, UNCITRAL, ICSID, SCC, SWISS, CEPANI, CRCICA, Hamburg Chamber of Commerce and OHADA) as well as ad hoc. His experience spans various fields and industries, including aviation, biochemistry, BITs, construction, distributorship & agency, fair trade practices, banking & finance, intellectual property, investments, joint ventures, post-mergers & acquisitions, real estate, sales & services, and telecommunication.

Maarten Draye regularly speaks and publishes on current arbitration-related topics. He co-authored and -edited the leading English language treatise on arbitration in Belgium (Arbitration in Belgium – A Practitioner’s Guide, Kluwer Law International, 2016). He is co-editor in chief of b-Arbitra, the Belgian review of arbitration.

In addition to his legal work, Maarten Draye represents CEPANI in UNCITRAL Working Group II on dispute settlement (Vienna/ New York) and Belgium at the ICC Commission on Arbitration & ADR. He is a member of CEPANI’s board of directors.

Since 2017, Maarten Draye has been recognized by peers and clients in Who’s Who Legal, GAR, Leaders League, Legal500 and other reputable ranking platforms.
